How to Train the Monsters Under Your Bed

Negativity is kind of like the monster under my bed. I don't like her. I know she's always lurking. And thinking about her only feeds her the energy she needs to be present in my life. In your life.

Is negativity unavoidable? The monster under my bed hasn't really shown her face since I was three, but negativity can be found in some seriously unexpected places. As much as we try to banish the drama from our lives, let go of the phony friends and unsporting prospects in our lives, and show the universe unrelenting love, we're still going to get slapped in the face once in a while.

Rather than avoiding negativity altogether... which is apparently an impossible feat, how can we grab the sucker and rearrange the energy flow? How can we train the monsters under our bed?

♥ Show 'em Who's Boss

At this moment, you should make a lunge for your master training tool... is it a swinging ball and chain? A big bag of Scooby snacks? A handmade whistle? An Italian leather whip? A vial of stardust? Whatever figurative method you use to get a handle on knowing that you are the one in charge of the energy that's taking you blow by blow will do the trick. Once you've got your master tool in hand... or in head... know that you can pull it out at any necessary moment. Tell yourself repeatedly (right now!) that you have the power to control whatever this monster is about to unleash on you. You're not going to run away scared. You're going to work with it, groom it, and turn it into something fluffy and lovable. Or, at least something mild-mannered. Negative energy has a way of making us feed it with more negative energy, allowing us to continually spiral. The important thing to remember (ball and chain in hand) is that you are the one in control, even if it doesn't feel like it. Turning positives into negatives is not the easiest thing to do, but it can be done with practice, and will lead to an overall less stressed lifestyle. Tell yourself that this is your life to do what you want with. It's never too late to shape it into what you want, experience things you desire, overcome struggles, or remedy (not change) unwise decisions you made in the past. You are the one in control.

♥ Tame the Beast

Now that you've got the power of the universal flow in the palm of your hand, what do you do with it? Unfortunately figurative magic wands and spellcasting don't work as the aforementioned master training tools tend to. How can we train our monsters to be a little tamer? A little more mild-mannered? Not so roaringly loud and vicious? First, realize that it is in the nature of monsters to be ferocious and destructive. Accept it. When we look at negativity it often seems to be out of our control. Usually we feel undeserving ("Why is my life like this?" "What did I do wrong?"), and inconvenienced. Whether we unknowingly drew the negativity towards us, or it was just a random bump is actually irrelevant to the situation, because it's there whether we called upon on it or not. Now you need to tame it and make it less scary. How can you do this? First change your perception of why it happened to you. We are presented with challenges in our life, often so that we may gain what we need. Subconsciously, we ask for bad things to happen so that we can overcome them. If you need to somehow find a way to have more trust in people, more faith in yourself, or you've secretly wanted to travel all your life you may be presented with seemingly negative obstacles that give you a way to get this. You may find out a friend or loved one has seriously wronged you, but this may give you the opportunity to learn who and how to trust people, or how to have more faith in a relationship. If you need to have more faith in yourself, than you may be presented with challenges that will help you do so, such as being exposed to harsh criticisms. If you feel that your life is going nowhere, and you wish you were venturing around the world, taking photographs of street style awesomeness and learning Swedish, then maybe getting fired isn't actually such a bad thing. You may look at it as a negative thing at first ("Wow, I can't even hold on to my shitty job? My life really is going nowhere.") But maybe it's an opportunity for you to have a leap of faith and start the life you want.You don't know how, you don't have the means to get from 0 to 100, yet, but it's something. Of course, this isn't the case with every single problem. But 90% of negatives are blessings in disguise. It's your choice whether you want to dust them off, groom them, and see what opportunities are really hiding under the scary mask.

♥ Keep Her on a Leash

Negativity is unavoidable, but we can do our very best to keep it at bay by handling it with grace. When your nasty negativity monster rears its fangs and the claws come out, we can't always be there to say "No! Sit! Stay! Heel!" Once in a while little negatives slip through, get the best of us, and that's okay. That's normal. It's happened to me and it will happen to you. It probably already has. How can you keep your negative energy in check, though? Always look for that opportunity. Perhaps telling you to always look for the silver lining, always be an optimist, learn from your mistakes seems like a cop out. It's not. Let me put it this way: When something bad happens, you have two choices:

Option A: Be pissed off at the world and the people you love, unhappy with yourself, and soak in your woes, thus missing potential opportunities to gain new perspective, new incite and new experiences (even if they are difficult, and challenging experiences) In which you get over it -eventually, partially- until another monster starts swinging her claws. Round and round we go.

Option B: Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions come along with your crappy situation, dust your shoulders off, grab a hold of your life, and really, really try to make something positive happen. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

Which option would you rather choose? Which option do you normally choose?

Don't let yourself get caught up in negativity. The most important thing to know- really know is that you are in control of your life. Your actions aren't driven by an outside force, and while they can be influenced, you ultimately make all of your own decisions. Take advantage and make the best ones that you can.♥

Wildfox Couture is All About the Love

Stuck in bed with a head cold, I can't help but spend a bit of time browsing through some of my faves. I've written about Wildfox Couture before, and while many of you have expressed liking the designs, I also agree that they're on the bittersweet end of being too pricey. Additionally, the designs are quite simple; some you could probably DIY if you wanted.

They're still in my heart though.

On a more positive note, their lookbooks are always fun and mildly inspiring to flip through. It's really simple day to day wear, that's comfy and you can just bum around and look and feel chic. Although some of the designs you could DIY, I'd almost rather spend the money if I want to wear one of their designs. I like to support brazen awesomeness and chic simplicity, even if it reaches out of my price range sometimes. I love comfort, so I'm all about it. I'm really loving the simplicity of these beach jumpers below. Nothing makes a statement like wearing a big, huge heart on your shirt, right?

Enjoy their newest collection here. In the meantime, I'm going to be bopping about online, writing my latest masterpiece, and resting in bed with hibiscus and ginger tea. Maybe I can coax my boyfriend to make me some cupcakes, as he sometimes does when I'm sick. What a sweetie.

Am I a Carbon Copy?

For my weekly slice of Love & Cake earlier this week I referenced the importance of not being afraid to be yourself, and yes, there is a particular reason behind it.

In the past couple weeks I've been labeled a "ripoff" or a "carbon copy" of another blogger. At first I was mildly alarmed and concerned (having your blog criticized is never fun), but then, I realized that this isn't an issue because I have a good amount of loyal readers, whom I love, and I know that everything I write on here is something that I love or believe in 100%. I'm not "pretending" anything, nor am I trying to be someone I'm not. After all, this is the internet and people will say what they want and I'm comfortable (happy, actually) with who I am. I don't care if it mirrors other people, or if people don't like me. Should I stop being myself and doing what I love because it reminds someone of someone else? That would be such an inane concept. It's like saying, "You can't like this/do this because so-and-so already is." Please.

The issue isn't about me. It's about you.

All of us have had people make us feel uncomfortable and insecure for being who we are. How do you feel about yourself? Are you really true to who and what you love? Do you have things to hide? If you could be anyone else in the whole world... would you just choose to be you? And if the answer is no, who is it, and why?

You don't have to answer these questions to me in the comments or anything. These are questions that should make you think. You will never find real happiness in being someone else. You can spend years (I know, I've done it!) trying to be someone else -whether it be a celebrity you admire, a picture perfect girlfriend, the worlds' best daughter, or the girl who's always up for anything- or you can take your stress level down by about fifty notches and just work on being comfortable in your own skin and living a truly happy life.

Love those who love you. Forget the rest.

Lazy Sunday DIY: Paint Your Shoes

Think Picasso, Mondrian, Jackson Pollack.... I'd love to have a "Jackson Pollack inspired" shoe, however the cartoon one above (via Jellyfish Design Studio) is really grabbing my fancy.

Every once in a while I'll be surfing online and come across a really great pair of shoes. And they're one of a kind. And hand painted. I once met a girl from Montreal that painted shoes for a living... it sounded romantic. Since then, the idea has always been in the back of my mind. After all, who wouldn't want a pair of custom painted shoes?

Here are some simple steps and tips if you want to paint your own shoes for a stylish and customized look. You can make it as simple or as complex as you want.

♥ Obviously use shoes that you don't really care about that much anymore, or haven't gotten a lot of use out of lately. Just in case you make a mistake. Don't go out and spend a load on nice shoes just to paint them. Hit up Goodwill or a thrift store if nothing in your closet will suffice!

Hand Painted Flats From Hix Kix

♥ Use basic acrylic paints. I recommend having a medium, small and large brush handy!

♥ Painting shoes that are leather is a bit of a process (you have to strip the shoe first, and then sand it, etc...) So, it's easiest to stick to a canvas material shoe if you're just starting, such as converse, or most flats. There is no need to put a white layer of paint on them first, either, but I recommend drawing your design on with a pencil or chalk first, and then painting over it.

♥ If you do want to try leather, first use a cotton swab and nail polish remover and rub the shoe down very well. This takes off the "spray coating" that manufacturers put on the shoe to protect it. Without this step, your paint job will just crack. Go over the shoes with this step about 3 times. After, lightly sand the shoe to make sure it is "raw" and ready for painting.

♥ If you want the shoe to be one solid color, and not painted designs, you can use one can of spray paint. Just be sure that if they're leather to follow the steps above, and if necessary take the laces out first! Also, fill the inside of the shoe with tissue paper or something similar to protect it from the paint!

♥ I haven't tried this, but I thought an interesting idea for a shoe would be a fabric collage. Use Mod Podge to paste magazine cutouts onto your shoes (you could also possibly try this with leather), and then be sure to paint a few layers of ModPodge over it to protect it.

♥ Embellish them, too! Use glitter, sequins, faux fur, studs, ribbon, or fabric flowers.

Love and (Red Velvet) Cake in a Jar

From My Baking Addiction

Valentines' Day has come and gone, but I believe in gracing people with gifts all year round! It's fun, sweet, thoughtful, keeps me busy, and puts less pressure on holiday spending come Christmas time.

If you remember back to this inspiration post from last month, I've been scouring the internet for the perfect cake in a jar recipe and I finally found it a few days ago. I was so excited (it's SO yummy) that I had to share. It's delicious, and so easy to just put a nice ribbon and tag on it and give it away to a friend, boyfriend, or whomever.

The red velvet cake is adapted from this New York Times Post (which comes from The Confetti Cakes Cookbook). However, to make it easier to put into a jar, we're going to make cupcakes with this recipe instead of a whole cake (As the original recipe calls for). This part of the recipe I found from My Baking Addiction.

CAKE

1 cup cake flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2/3 cup vegetable oil
3/4 granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons red food coloring
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon white vinegar

FROSTING

8 oz (1 package) cream cheese

3 tablespoons softened butter

3 3/4 cups confectioners sugar

♥ Bake

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 12 cupcake wells with paper liners or spray pan with spray with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Sift together cake flour, cocoa powder, and salt.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine oil and sugar until well-blended. Add egg and mix until combined.

4. Turn your mixer down to the lowest speed and add vanilla, then slowly add in the food coloring. Note: If you are using liquid food coloring, it will take about 2 tablespoons of coloring to get a dark red shade. I used about 1 tablespoon of gel dye to achieve the shade in the photographs. Add the dye slowly and color according to your preference.

5. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk in two batches; scrape down the side of the bowl. Continue mixing until just combined, taking care not to over mix.

6. Place baking soda in a small dish, stir in vinegar and add to batter with the machine running. Beat for about 10 seconds.

7. Using a medium scoop (about 3 tablespoons), divide batter between the 12 wells, filling each well about 2/3 full of batter. Bake for 20-24 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Be careful not to over bake.

♥ Cream Cheese Frosting:

Combine the cream cheese and butter and mix well, preferably using an electric mixer. Gradually add the sugar, and lastly, the vanilla extract. Whip for a minute or so longer to make fluffy and be sure that everything is well combined.

♥ Package Them!

To put them in a jar, wait until the cupcakes have fully cooled. Remove the cupcakes from the liners and slice them (the horizontal way) to create round shapes. You should be able to get 3 or so good, round pieces from each cupcake, however, this depends on how many layers you would like in the jar. You can just cut the cupcakes in half if you want more cake than frosting. To package them, use clean mason jars and put the cake pieces into the jar, adding frosting into the center, and then layering more cake on top, and finish with another layer of frosting. Add sprinkles if you wish! Secure the lid tightly onto the jar. Feel free to decorate with a ribbon and give away as gifts, or store them in the fridge for a yummy treat later!

The leggings will certainly set you back more than American Apparel or F21 (They run about $84.00 a pair) but if you can pull off her quirky and original designs in your day-to-day wear, they'll undoubtedly make an ideal staple to your wardrobe. Besides... handmade beats massed produced any day of the week.

If You Want to Make Mad Bling from Your Blog...

Well hello.

So you're wanting to make some money on the side with your blog, eh? Or perhaps you're pulling in close to 40 hours on your baby, churning out articles and outfits and inspiration posts... not to mention working a "real" job, all in hopes of turning your blog into your next profitable career venture. You know, living the dream. But it's been 6 months. Or two years. And you're still only making enough to buy a tube of lipstick on a monthly basis through Adsense. When's it gonna' give?

It starts here.

I know there aren't too many resources out there for fashion bloggers about monetizing, blogging, getting into the fashion business or turning yourself/blog into a brand. (By the way, IFB is a big resource, put it on your list if you're in the dark about this) From yours truly, some tips to consider, ideas to launch and a bit of my own two cents about how to start monetizing on your work:

♥ Sell something, but not just anything. Who are you? What is your niche? What do you love, love, love and how can you put some extra, hardcore focus into it? Do your fashion posts consist of mostly graphic tees? Instead of selling all your leftover duds on Ebay, why not open an online boutique that's all tees, or better yet, design your own? Whatever you're selling, make sure it's unique to you. Your readers are reading your blog because they like you and want to relate to you. So make sure what you're selling represents your bad self as much as possible.

♥ If you've got a pretty decent fan base going on by now, why not do a round-up of your best ten articles/posts, plus a few bonus posts, and random Q&A about you, and make it into a downloadable e-book. Price it at ... well, whatever you want.

♥ Social currency? Heck yes. Because networking can lead to some awesome friendships, killer leads, and ultimately awesome opportunities. Work your prowess hard and try to get a media pass to a killer fashion show, beauty product launch, or editorial party. Start by asking around who you know. Then send a an uber-friendly e-mail to those you admire who are doing what you want to do, asking them how they got there.

♥ Stop procrastinating and get some private sponsor love going on. If you don't feel like you have the traffic to set a monthly price, start out by swapping ad buttons with other bloggers until your traffic goes up. How do you go about doing that? This is where your network of lovely people comes into play... tell everyone! Tweet it, blog it, throw it up on facebook, send postcards. Ask your besties to do the same.

♥ Offer a promotion to potential sponsors. Maybe free for the first month? Or designate a special section and host a "sponsor of the week" feature every week for a bit of extra exposure.

♥ Join an affiliate network. The best way to do this? Think like your readers. I've seen hundreds, really hundreds, of NastyGal ads on different fashion blogs. And Nastygal is great, but since everyone has it, my eyeballs are becoming numb to all the ads, and chances are, I'm not going to click on it. Think of something original, but something that will spark the interest of your readers. Google Affiliate or Commission Junction are both great, and they have lots of company buttons available in different sizes. They're also easy to join. Sometimes if you have a company in mind, you can Google them to see if they have an affiliate network.

♥ Put up a donation button! This is really simple and you can customize it however you want. You can write something like, "Like my blog? Click here to donate!" or even "Buy me a latte?" Your readers can easily click and send whatever amount they want through Paypal.

♥ If you have a really popular weekly post or idea that always gets a lot of hits (such as a weekly DIY, TILT post, or fashion photography) do a spin-off of it and offer it as a $5 monthly podcast or livestream subscription to your readers.

♥ Coming out with a product, e-book or opening a shop that's going to be totally epic? Make sure you build up the hype a couple weeks before you launch. . . Use your beloved network of awesome friends, fashinoistas, designers, writers, and bloggers and business owners to help get the word out. Mix it into your social media salad to really get the word out.

♥ Do you know they fashion world back to front? Can you style just as good as Rachel Zoe? Got a knack for how to score the best vintage dresses on the net? Put together an e-course for your loyal readers... make sure to prove your expertise, build the hype, and alert your readers to tell their friends.

How to Recover From a Massive Meltdown

So, today I had a meltdown. I don't talk know why. It just happened... you know when a whole bunch of little things just happen at once and you just... you know?

I know you've been there. We all have. It happens to everyone, I'm sure. Sometimes for no particular reason, other than we need to emotional unleash for a short while and then slowly recharge our batteries... hopefully to bigger and better heights. Anyway, I am since recovering from my meltdown and thought I'd share a few tips:

1) Drink lots of water. Firstly, because if you've been crying a lot, this will help you get your hydration back. Recovery isn't easy when you're starting it with a dehydration headache, so make sure to drink loads of water!

2) Stretch. Just like you start off a workout with stretching, it's good to start your emotional recharge with a nice, easy stretch of your muscles, too. It will help you gain a small amount of focus, thus a calm and clear mind. Plus, you'll feel better just shaking everything out.

3) Tell someone about it. I don't usually talk about many personal things on my blog, but sometimes I feel it's okay. For me, and for you guys, too. You realize that I'm just a regular person behind all these articles and fancy photos, and maybe you can take some of my experiences to heart and somehow relate them to something going on in your life. Additionally, I also get to talk and unload. Talking gets things out in the air and off your chest.

4) Let yourself move on. Accept that you needed a moment (or hour, or day) of unhappy wailing, crying or venting. Remember that it's better let out that kept inside. If you unleashed on someone that didn't really deserve it (we are all guilty of this sometimes!) apologize earnestly. Maybe tell them what was going on at the time if you feel comfortable. Allow yourself to let go of whatever happened and keep moving forward.

After all, that's all we can really do. Right? ♥

Lazy Sunday DIY: Make a Photo Wall

It was early last week when I walked into my favorite bakery to grab a fresh baguette and possibly an overpoweringly chocolate infused brownie when I spotted a familiar face behind the counter. Her name is Vonnida and we had met randomly in mid December, though I hadn't seen her since. Needless to say, we played a small game of catch up, got lost in minor chit-chat, and planned a hang out date. It's always fun making new friends, isn't it?

I've been seeing these scattered on the internet here and there, but I'd never actually seen a photo wall until I stepped into Vonnida's apartment for tea one afternoon. Wow. It was impressive. A massive wall with old-school Polaroids scattered about in a random, but intimate, pattern. I was floored by the inspiration this gave me and now I'm totally on board to make one myself. She takes one photo every day, but you can obviously do as many (or as little) as you'd like.

Here are some tips for starting/building your wall:

♥ If you live in an apartment, or a place where you don't want to tack a bunch of holes into the wall, use painters scotch tape. It's inexpensive, strong, and won't peel the paint off of your wall however many months down the line if you choose to take down or move your photos. Additionally, what you can do is invest in a large tack board, or poster paper and paste or tape the photos onto there. That way, if you decide to move, the photo wall is conveniently mobile. Also, you can get a bit of string or yarn and instead of taping the photos to the wall, tack the string to the wall and just hang the photos using little clothespins. (See the photo below)

♥ Don't stress out about this project. It's supposed to be fun and friendly! Don't feel like you have to take top-notch photos with an expensive camera (even the older cameras, such as Holga's can be like, $60, and that doesn't include the investment for film!). You can buy a cheap, disposable camera at any drugstore for fairly cheap, film obviously included, or use a basic family digital camera or even your cell phone to take instagram photos and print them.

♥ Insistent in having the oldschool photo vibe? Take a look at my popular article on where to find a vintage camera.

♥ Depending on how you want your wall to look, it may be smart to take some measurements before putting up any photos. Use a ruler and pencil to mark lines if you want the photos to be neatly lined up. Also! Try not to use a wall that will get a lot of sunlight, because sunlight tends to fade photos over time!

♥ Just start snapping away! If you don't take a lot of photos it can be sort of awkward at first. When I first got a camera, I never used it because I always felt awkward taking a photo because it felt out of character for me, and because I didn't even know the right moment to take a photo. I was totally unsure of what to photograph. Just dive in and start snapping away at friends, family, your dog, the beach, or yourself! You'll get more comfortable behind the lens, don't worry.

♥ Feel free to get creative. This may defeat the purpose of the phrase "photo wall", but I think it's fun to make it more like a collage, than just photos. I plan on putting up decorated notes, drawings and some of my favorite quotes in addition to my photos, too!

Hey Lovely Ladies!

How's your week going? Eventful? Slow? Warm weather? Snowed in? V-Day plans? This week has been slow for me, but nonetheless exhausting. We've been redecorating our apartment little by little, adding some things, taking some things out. I guess you could call it an early spring cleaning. Frosted with Bailey's Irish Cream

Vodka, liqueur, coffee, cream, chocolate. Who could resist? Okay, honestly, I'm not a big drinker, but when it comes to cupcakes, I like cocktail flavors that have somehow weaseled there way in. This awesome recipe and is pretty straightforward and easy to follow.

I recommend the cake recipe below, because it combines the coffee, chocolate and Kahlua taste, while the frosting gives you the Bailey's flavor. A sort of mudslide cupcake thing going on:

CAKE:

♥ 1/2 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder

♥ 1/2 cup hot coffee

♥ 1/2 cup Kahlua

♥ 1 1/3 cups all purpose flour

♥ 2 teaspoons baking powder

♥ 1/4 teaspoon salt

♥ 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

♥ 1 cup granulated white sugar

♥ 2 large eggs

♥ 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

The first step is to combine the coffee, Kahlua and cocoa in a bowl, and mix well. This mixture has to cool to room temperature, so do it ahead of time -about an hour or so- before you plan on making the cupcakes. Next, preheat your oven to 350 F.

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and whipped. Next add the eggs and vanilla, mixing until all ingredients are fully incorporated. In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt). Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet mixture and mix well. Lastly, stir in the bowl of cocoa mixture.

Line your cupcakes tins with papers and fill each paper about 3/4 of the way full with batter. Bake at 350 F for about 17-20 minutes. Stick a toothpick in one of the cupcakes, and if it comes out clean, they are ready. Allow them to cool completely before frosting!

BAILEYS FROSTING

♥ 3-4 cups confectioners sugar

♥ 1 stick unsalted butter (room temp)

♥ 4 tablespoons Bailey's Irish Cream

♥ Food Coloring, if desired

Whip the butter until light and fluffy, gradually adding the sugar 1/4 cup at a time. Lastly, add the Bailey's and then the food coloring, if desired. Mix well, and use immediately! (Or store in the fridge until you're ready to use it!)

Enjoy! (Also a good V-Day gift, if you're short on ideas!)

Lazy Sunday DIY: Love Note Cookies for V-Day

Okay, so really these cookies are known as "fortune cookies" but if you put love notes in them, then they are just perfect for the upcoming Valentine's Day! This recipe is originally grabbed from Alisa Burke, but I've added a little Valentine's Day twist on it to make it fun and festive. They are really simple and inexpensive to make, so enjoy!

Ingredients Needed:
♥ 1 egg white
♥ 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract (or whatever flavor you want!)
♥ 1 egg white
♥ pinch of salt
♥ 1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
♥ 1/4 cup granulated sugar
♥ Red food dye (optional, but perfect for V-Day!)

In one bowl, mix together the dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar). In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg white. When the mixture is frothy and bubbly, gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

For colored cookies: Divide the batter into two separate bowls (or however many colors you would like to make) For a light pink add 2 drops of food coloring and mix well. For a darker pink/red add 5 drops of food coloring. I like a combo of red and pink for Valentine's Day, but you can choose any colors you want!

Spray or grease a cookie sheet and spoon small amounts (1-2 teaspoons) of batter onto the sheet. Use the spoon to spread the batter thin. (See above) Bake for 3-5 minutes at 350 F, or until the edges are darkened.

When you take them out of the oven, you need to work kind of fast, because the cookies only fold when they are warm. To get the shape, place the small love note inside the cookie and fold the cookie in half, enclosing the note inside the cookie. Then pinch the folded cookie creating a moon-like shape (it helps if you do it over the edge of a cup or glass), and let it cool to hold it's shape. They're a little bit delicate, so be careful!

Package them in any way you'd like and give them to your faves. (Save some for yourself!)

Bad Days are a Pain in the Ass... How to Deal

We all have them. It's no secret, really. The typical stub-your-toe-in-the-morning, or maybe your bf calls and cancels plans (or just breaks up with you out of nowhere), or you fail a test, get fired, your favorite cafe ruins your morning coffee, etc.

Or maybe it's none of these things. Maybe it's actually a good day and you just woke up pissed at the world. Hey, it happens.

Bad days, if you don't mind my saying, are a pain in the ass. Perhaps necessary to having a happy life, and inevitable to having a normal life, but a pain in the ass none the less. Right?

Usually I'd spout away at, "Oh, just take a bubble bath, melt your troubles away!" or "Write in your journal, take the weight off your shoulders." These things work sometimes, for some of us. But they aren't the solution to everything. I know that. You know that.

On the contrary to my usual banter, I have a new suggestion for dealing with your bad days. Let them unfold. Assess them. Ask yourself why this negative lightening bolt has struck you and why you feel the way you do. Maybe you aren't overreacting to something small, or a series of unfortunate events throughout the day, but something legitimately unfair and just plain bad. Maybe a colleague of yours to credit for your work -again- and you've literally had it up to hear and are ready to break out the claws and throw coffee in her face. (Though not recommended)

Let yourself be in a bad mood. For one day, let yourself glare at oncoming foot traffic, ignore your every text message, and cry in your comfy, cozy bed with whatever comfort you can find (a teddy bear, a pint of ice cream, your favorite tabloid). Putting serious thought into why something happened, and why it effected us the way it did is one of the best ways to prevent something from happening again. Or at least a good way to soften the blow the next time around. Some days we need to do this and that's okay. It's human nature to have a little negativity in us, and instead of trying to overpower it or push it way back in us with flowers and rainbows and cake (okay, maybe cake is a good thing), allow it to just let it get the best of you for a little while, and then let it fade away.

My Curls

If you read this post, you'll know that for the last few weeks I've been walking on air with 14-inch, pin-straight extensions that I put in myself. After a few weeks of unwashed hair and grungy updos, I decided it was time to retire my glue-in extensions and wash them out. This was my first time ever having extensions, and I've heard that removing glue-ins can be a really frustrating, long and painful process. I actually found it pretty easy, as long as you are patient and follow simple directions. It only took me a 20 minute oil treatment, a 20 minute conditioning treatment and a couple good washes. Really, it was more like getting a spa treatment on my hair. If you have any questions about applying extensions yourself, or how to get them out please email me! I'd be glad to help.

Anyway, I've been bouncing around in my curls for the past couple days and have been really preoccupied with what to do with my hair next. Thinking about fun party wigs, and a chic mohawk. Thoughts?

Lazy Sunday DIY: Daily Sugar Scrub

I love sugar scrub for two reasons: It does miracles for your skin, and it's so easy to make yourself. I've been on this-exfoliate-and-moisturize-daily kick, so I've been making a fresh batch every morning before I shower (yes, it can be that easy and quick to make). If you find yourself fresh out of your favorite scrub and can't get your hands on something fast enough, read below:

Sugar scrub generally serves two purposes: exfoliating and moisturizing. In order to exfoliate, you need something gritty and small, like salt, sugar, jojoba beads, coffee grinds... basically anything that won't clog up your drain! In order to moisturize your skin, use oil. I use coconut oil because it absorbs readily into your skin and doesn't leave as much of an oily residue on your skin as other oils.

♥ Here is a basic recipe that you can throw together in 3 minutes before shower time:

1 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons oil (it can be any oil that's good for your skin: coconut, olive, macadamia nut, jojoba, sunflower, etc. You can get most of these at a grocery store)

Mix these together well and slather on in the shower.

Other additives:

♥ I keep a few of my favorite fragrance and essential oils around for things like this. This is where I buy them. Add 1 tsp to the recipe above for fragrance oil. Add 3-5 drops if using essential oil.

♥ Adding fruit puree is also fun, has great skin benefits, and offers a scent on it's own. Use about a 1/2 cup of strawberry, banana, or papaya fruit pureed in a blender. Additionally, add another cup of sugar to balance out the sugar to water ratio.

♥ Personally, I like to add a small amount of shower gel to my sugar scrub in the morning. Especially when I'm just using a basic recipe, such as above. First of all, it allows me to wash and exfoliate in one go. Secondly, I know I don't have to worry about any oil left on my skin, because the soap breaks up the phospholipid bilayers of the oils. Additionally, adding shower gel changes the consistency and makes the scrub more "sticky", making it easier to scrub onto your skin. Add 2 tablespoons of your favorite shower gel to the recipe above.

Tropical Rum Cupcakes

The fun about this cake (besides the rum, of course!) is the toppings you can choose to put on it. This is a simple yellow vanilla cake recipe, that is all about the toppings. I've been on this baking kick lately (cabin fever?) and thought this would be a perfect recipe to get our minds off of the winter blah blah blahs.

You need a really simple vanilla cake recipe. I like to make my cakes from scratch... but, I'm sure if you like things less complicated than I then any Angel Food or Pillsbury will work fine. This is the recipe I used:

Cake

1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

2/3 cup granulated white sugar

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Zest of 1 large lemon (outer yellow skin)

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup milk

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract, and the eggs one at a time. Mix until fully incorporated. In a separate bow, combine the dry ingredients (flour, salt, and baking powder) Slowly and alternately (beginning and ending with the milk) mix the milk and flour mixture in the butter, sugar eggs and vanilla combination. Mix until you have a nice, creamy batter. Lastly, add the lemon zest-about 1-2 teaspoons.

Line a cupcake tin with cupcake papers and fill them with the batter, about 3/4 of the way full. Bake in the oven for about 17-20 minutes. To test, stick a toothpick in one and it should come out clean. Allow them to cool fully!

Toppings

♥ Citrus Frosting This is a really easy and delicious frosting. The base is cream cheese (Citrus and cream cheese... YOWZER!) The other great thing about this frosting is that you can use any flavor of citrus you want. Simply combine 8 oz. cream cheese (1 package) with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1 1/2 tablespoons of your favorite citrus juice (orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple). Then, gradually add 5 cups of confectioners sugar, mixing well. Feel free to add a food dye to this, too! A separate tropical mix of colors (yellow, orange, lime green, bright blue) are fun!

♥ Fruit & Crunch Combo This is where it gets really fun. You can basically choose any toppings you want to go on your cupcakes (keep in mind, some are best added just before serving, though!) I like: mandarin orange slices, kiwi slices, banana, and mango). To add a "crunch" effect, simply use a rolling pin to mash up 4-5 graham crackers so that they make a crumbly dust and store them in a bowl. After frosting the cupcakes, dip the frosted part into the bowl of crumbs, covering the cupcake top and making a "sand" looking effect! Top with fruit, as well, if you'd like!

♥ Toasted Coconut If you're a coconut person this is also a yummy additive to cupcakes! It's also very easy! Take about 1 cup of shredded coconut and heat them in the oven at 350 F for about 3-5 minutes. Watch them closely because they cook fast! Let them cool and sprinkle the toasted shavings onto your cupcakes!

Rum
The addition of rum is really simple. I use about 1 tablespoon... not a lot, but enough to get some flavor in there. For this particular recipe a coconut rum would work deliciously! Pour the rum into a bowl, and when you go to eat your cupcake (fully frosted and topped with yummy goodness), take the paper completely off and put your cupcake into the bowl. Allow it to sit for a few minutes so the cake soaks up the rum. It does get a slightly soggy texture, much like a rum cake, but if you mix it all together, eating with a spoon or fork, it tastes amazing.♥

How to Wear Sparkles Without Being a Diva

"This is really random, but do you have any advice for wearing sparkles? I like them, but I don't want to look to flashy or like I'm attention seeking or something! Is there a way I can wear sparkles without looking like a complete diva?"

So, let's recap. Sparkles are way, way in right now. Sequins gleamed on the runway in both resort and spring RTW for 2012 (Elie Saab, Givenchy, Jenny Packham). I've been seeing them everywhere and I love the look... I love that sparkles and sequins can jazz up just about any ensemble. So how can you wear sparkles without making it overkill? It's obvious that you don't want walk out of the drenched in sequins and glitter. But when is it too much? It's all about mixing and matching, in my opinion. Think of your basic, go-to wear (pants/skirt, basic tee or tank, jacket) as your canvas and you need to gleam them up... without overdoing it.

If you take a peek at the runway shows, a lot of the sparkles and sequins in the pieces are very elegantly used. There were no entire pieces that were entirely sequins (We'll talk about when that can look good, though!) I love pieces that just have a little bit of glimmer on them.

♥ Clothes
Sparkles are mainly a night dress up, obviously because they reflect a lot of light and in broad daylight, it can look a bit daunting, even unnecessary. However, if you can wear them in a subtle way, sparkles are perfectly fine for a daytime look, as well! I think these pieces are great for a semi-dressed up look. They're versatile (you can wear in an everyday look, out on a date, or for a mini occasion, such as out to brunch). All of these styles go great with jeans, skirts, shorts/leggings combo, or a more formal black pant style. I would recommend staying away from a bottom piece that has additional sparkles, though. That may make it overkill. Subtle sparkles on clothes are coquettish and chic. Looking like a walking disco ball is not. Also, if you feel that you can get away with wearing a full on sequined covered top in the middle of the day, try to dress it down with a denim or khaki jacket, or regular old jeans. Pairing it with a short skirt and 4 inch heels may scream diva. The same goes for a sequin covered skirt, or leggings. Try to dress it down a little with the top-something like a basic tee or tank.

♥ Cosmetics
Makeup is a great way to sport sparkles. Eyes, lips and even hair are great places to sprinkle some shimmer. Rule of thumb is choosing one or two looks (e.g eyes and lips, hair and cheeks, eyes and body shimmer) to wear glitter. Choosing more than two is getting to be in the "danger of being overkill" zone. I also love this eyeliner by urban decay (I have the purple and wear it almost everyday!)

♥ Accessories
Accessories, in my opinion, are really the way to go when it comes to sparkles. Mainly, because it's really hard to go overboard with sparkles when you're accessorizing. Anything from wallets, bags, shoes, hats and belts. Additionally, you could probably have a combination of three of these (even more depending on your
style and daring) and still look fabulous. As far as accessories goes, though, keep this in mind. If you're already wearing a bit of glitter in your hair, on your eyes, it's probably too much to throw on a sequined hat and a sparkly tee. Instead, try and even out your top and your bottom. If you've got a sparkly hat or shimmer in your hair, try and match shoes and/or a bag with it. If you've got sequined leggings, maybe just grab your sparkly wallet, iphone case, or shimmery lip gloss. A glittery belt is a great way to add flair to an outfit that has absolutely no sparkles at all.

♥ How (and when) to rock the diva look:
Sometimes it's fun to rock out a look of sparkles galore. Just probably not when you're out shopping at the grocery store. Here are some great pieces (and appropriate occasions) to channel your inner diva:

1) Formal date/event: Attempt to wear the classic little black sequined covered dress. Just don't match it with a sequined clutch, and glittery shoes. Adorn your face with pretty, yet minimal, makeup, as well (basics, such as a foundation, eye shadow, blush and a little lip color, sans glitter)

2) Girls night. If you've got full throttle sparkles on your ensemble, you could probably also match some shoes with it. Maybe a bag, too, though I would choose one or the other and not both. Same goes for the makeup. If you've got a disco ball ensemble, go easy with the facial embellishing. Sparkle your eyes or cheeks, and leave the rest of you to be un-glitterfied.

Lazy Sunday DIY: Dip Dyed Hair

I've been seeing this trend everywhere. I know I posted a link to a tutorial in my Weekend Word a couple weeks ago, but it got a lot of interest, so I wanted to do more with it and post some photos of different looks, tips for dying, etc.

I found this video online, which I LOVE, and it really shows exactly how to do it. The only thing, is that it may be more difficult for you gals with short hair (like me!) Sorry, and I feel your pain!

The steps are pretty straight forward, especially if you have any experience dying hair yourself. Basically, put your hair into two braids, and only the ends that you want to be an outrageously awesome color. Paint the dye one (use a dye brush), leaving it on for a good 20 minutes or so (follow the instructions of course, but most are 15-30 minutes, depending on the brightness of the hue you want, and the color of your own hair) Wash out any excess dye very thoroughly! Also, be sure to use a really deep conditioner after you're done with the dying process. Dye chemicals are often very harmful to your hair!

Which hair dye should you use? I've always been a MANIC PANIC fan. I've rarely heard bad things about them (no harsh chemicals, not pricey, etc.) and they've been around for forever. Plus, I've had my share of hair dyes in the past and I believe MANIC PANIC was my first! I also have heard really good things about Colour Fiend (available at Hot Topic) and Special Effects, but I have never used them.

Cherry Bomb Cupcakes

I recently discovered black forest cake and am beyond smitten! I wanted to share because I think a lot of people will like this, plus it's pretty simple. A whole cake is yummy, but cupcakes are fun for a party, or any small get together. Or, you know, just for yourself.

First you need an awesome, but basic, chocolate cake recipe. I used this one (below) last week, so I know it's good, but if you have another one in mind, that's fine, too!

Ingredients Needed:

♥ CAKE

1/2 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder

1 cup boiling hot water

1 1/3 cups all purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup granulated white sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

♥ CHERRIES
1 1/2 cups pitted cherries (you can buy them canned, such as the kind you'd put in a pie)
1 Tablespoon rum
1 Tablespoon granulated white sugar

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix very well! You may need to add more (or less) sugar... whatever fits your palette! Set aside until the cupcakes have been baked, and cooled.

♥ CREAM
1/2 Pint whipping cream
2-3 tablespoons granulated white or confectioners' sugar (Again, amount desired is to your taste preference)
1 tsp. vanilla extract

In a large bowl whip all of these ingredients together using an electric mixer (or a whisk, though electric will be much faster and less labor intensive!) Mix until thick and forms peaks. Beware! Over mixing and it will turn into butter!

Directions
Put the cocoa powder in a small bowl, and mix the boiling water into it. Let it cool (it needs to be at room temperature before you put it into the final batter, so perhaps do this step a bit ahead of time). Preheat your oven to 375 F. Next, cream together the softened butter and the sugar in a large bowl. Then add in one egg at a time, mixing well. Lastly add the vanilla. In a separate bowl mix together the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt). Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredient mixture, mixing very well. Lastly, add the cocoa/water mixture (again, this should be at room temperature!) and mix until everything is incorporated into one, even consistency batter.

Line the cupcake tins with papers, and bake for approximately 16-20 minutes. I found that 20 minutes is perfect for my oven, though yours may slightly differ. Allow the cupcakes to cool on a baking rack.

♥ PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Black Forest is a combination of layers of whip cream, chocolate cake and cherries. Yum, right? So to make these cupcakes into the ultimate "Cherry Bomb" black forest cake follow these steps:

Using a very sharp knife, slice the "tops" off of the cupcakes. Set the top aside for now. Carve a small hole in the center of the cupcake, attempting to make it hollow. Just don't cut all the way through the cake. You will be putting cherry sauce in here, so you really need to try to relish the "cup" part of the cupcake. Fill the hole with 1-2 spoonfuls of cherry sauce (however much fits without overflowing it too much). Put the cupcake top back onto the cupcake and then add a large spoonful of whipped cream. Then, another layer of cherry sauce. Feel free to sprinkle chocolate shavings or cocoa powder on top, and enjoy. (Keep them refrigerated overnight if they aren't eaten immediately! Leftover whipped cream should be kept in the fridge, too!)

How to Love Yourself (Love and Cake!)

Hey Chicas!

Let me tell you a story: As a recent high school graduate, entering my first semester of college, I was a very lost and unhappy soul. On the surface, I was independent, bubbly and thrilled to be finally leaving the nest of my parents house and small town life. On the inside I was insecure, unhappy and very, very alone. What made it even worse, was that I didn't know why, so I didn't have anyone I felt like I could talk to. I could easily explain that I wasn't happy, but how could anyone help me if even I didn't know what the problem was? I consistently latched onto things that made me feel better "in the moment", but in the long run made me feel worse. I spiraled... didn't eat a lot... read a lot of celebrity gossip (hours, seriously)... dropped out of school (More than once. More than twice.)... spent money I didn't have (still paying it off). It was more than just a sticky situation. It also took a very long time for me to recover. In a way, I'm actually still recovering.

The "Aha!" moment? I lacked self love. I also thought that these negative feelings defined me as a person, so I eventually began to carry them half proudly, wearing them on my sleeve, and forcing my negativity onto people that didn't deserve it. Double whammy.

Self love is a topic that I've been wanting to explore more and more, because it's something that effects every one of us on a day to day basis. While it is not a new theory that the media puts unfair pressures on young girls to look and act a certain way, the theory still holds water. Plenty of water, in my opinion. But whether it be the media, our relationships, our upbringings, our surroundings, or a combination of many things, the truth is on the table: Self love a struggle for a lot of us at some point or another.

♥ What is self love?
Let's begin by defining what it is to truly love yourself. Things such as gifting yourself those new Jimmy Choos, or making bubble baths a daily ritual are all fun and well. But is that really self love? No, probably not. In essence, those are very small acts that reflect how you feel about yourself. Is loving yourself having confidence? Well, yes and no. Confidence is a big step in self love, but you can be confident about something and still feel badly about yourself overall.

Self love is a combination of confidence, respect and adoration for oneself.

♥ Negativity
It as equally as important to define negativity as it is to define self love. Negativity is the root of your self love destruction. Feelings such as jealousy, betrayal, and fear have a tendency to drain you of your self love. While these are emotions that everyone has to deal with at some point in their lives -and it's perfectly healthy to have these feelings once in a while, there is a line to draw between healthy negatives and unhealthy negatives. For example, if you feel yourself constantly comparing yourself to others (are you jealous of their looks/life?), which in turn makes you feel poorly about yourself, this is a sign you may need to start working on your self love. All feelings come from somewhere. The important thing is to not let these feelings linger and negatively affect our every day lives.

♥ How to Start Loving Yourself
The great thing about self love is that it can be ever evolving. You can never love too much. The amount of love you can have for yourself (and others) is infinite. As you continue to learn, and progress every day you will find that you love yourself more and more because of the knowledge, talents, and relationships you are developing and experiencing. Additionally, as you begin to channel and harbor more and more positivity, the more you have to give out, and the more you will get back in return. Keep in mind, the same philosophy holds true for negativity.

First, grab a pencil and a piece of paper. Better yet, grab a whole notebook and start a journal. Make this page one. You don't have to let anyone read it if you don't want to, but I encourage you to if you find that you have someone that you trust who will 100% support you in your quest for self love. Answer these questions, honestly:

♥ What about myself makes me happy?

....Why?

♥ What about myself makes me unhappy?

....Why?

♥ What is one thing I wish I could do, but feel like I can't?

♥ So, I could do it, but _____ is stopping me.

♥ What is one thing I would change about myself OR my life if I could right now?

♥ I want to change this thing because it makes me feel ______.

♥ What is one small step I can take to actively make this change happen?

♥ If I've searched up and down for a way to change my current situation, and absolutely can't, what is one

thing I can do to try to lessen these feelings in a healthy way?

♥ Who is one person that I trust no matter what?

♥ What advice would they give me?

♥ What advice would I give them, if they felt how I felt?

Take a break for an hour or two, or even a whole day. Review these answers at a later date when you have cleared your mind for a little while. Before you go back and review them, repeat these words out loud to yourself:

"I have the power to make my life exactly the way I want it.
I have overcome challenges in my life before, and I will do it again. Nothing can stop me."

Then, go back and read your answers with as much positivity as you can muster. How do you feel? Better? Different? More positive? Ready to conquer? On the next page in your journal, write down one step you can take to make your life healthier and more positive. If you have ideas off hand, write about your plans to how you are going to go about making those changes. The influence can come from the answers on page one, or from anywhere. If you think it'll be a challenge for you and you still want to try it, write that. If you feel afraid that you won't do it, "just because", then write that and then assess whether your trusted friend from page one can help you in doing this. The important thing about your first page is that you've put out into the open the good, the bad, the goal, and the support you have. Write in your journal as little or as often as you feel like (I recommend at least once a week, though!) Before writing in it, always repeat the words above, and then read your first page.

How to Practice Loving Yourself
Self love is a daily practice for some of us. It is also a daily struggle for some of us. It's important to know that everyone has "off" days, or "bad" days. That is part of life. We can't (and shouldn't!) be expected to be walking on clouds 24/7, and I certainly don't recommend aiming for this. I read a really great article a week or so ago at The Daily Love, that explained a really great way to lessen bad feelings in your life. When we have a feeling, there is a part of our mind that is also observing this feeling. For example, your boyfriend cheats on you and you feel heartbroken, sad, and betrayed. However, there is also a part of your mind that is observing how and why you feel this way. There is a "space" around these feelings. Do you ever have times when you are crying hysterically because of something awful, and then after, you like to just sit in silence and think? Possibly assess the situation as a whole? In a sense, your mind is able to detach itself from the feelings and you are looking at this situation from an "outsiders perspective". This is when you should take the opportunity to pull everything about the action/reaction bit of your situation and remedy it from happening again. Though sometimes difficult, analyzing your feelings in the midst of them is the first step in learning how to change them faster (to be positive), and how to avoid them later (channeling out the negative). I highly recommend this practice.

Other ways to practice loving yourself daily:

♥ Journal- Not only is getting your feelings "off your chest" a great way to manage negative vibes, but being able to look back on old entries of how you overcame past challenges will give you the confidence to do so in the future.

♥ Support Not only should you seek out a good support system (friends, family, boyfriend, teacher, AA group, whatever works for you!) but you should support others in their self love journey, even if they don't necessarily ask. It will make you feel better about yourself, and you'll be sending some serious vibes out into the universe... that are sure to come back to you.

♥ Meditate Not just for mountain top gurus and long haired hippies. In all seriousness, if you can even find 5-10 minutes a day to sit in a quiet place and think of absolutely nothing but concentrating on your breathing (eyes closed!) you will feel SO much better about yourself and your life. It takes a few times to practice, but it is so worth it.

♥ Put Yourself Out There This can really be a hard one for some people. I feel that an important step to really loving yourself is putting yourself out there. Whether it be trying something new, showing someone your art work for a critique, or striking up a conversation with someone you don't know. Subconsciously you are telling yourself, and the universe: "This is who I am. This is who I want to be." And the more you put yourself out there, the more comfortable you are going to be with that.

♥ Shut up. Okay, just kidding. Sort of. Hear me out? If you are a person that gossips and talks negatively about others, please stop and ask yourself why. Is it to fit in? Is it so you can have something in common with your fellow gossipers? Are you bored? Perhaps the "gossip" was a misunderstanding. Because, really, gossiping and talking negatively about another person is only a reflection of yourself. If you truly have beef with someone, please just address them directly, politely, and seriously.

♥ Process of Elimination This can be a really hard one. There are things in the world that we let ourselves do that-even though they create negativity in our lives-we do them anyone. Some examples can be smoking, drinking, reading tabloids (or any magazines where we compare ourselves to glossy photos of Hollywood glamor), and continuing to hang out with disloyal friends. I'm sure we have all been guilty of these things at some point in our lives, but if you find yourself doing it daily, or on a too-regular basis, use the process of elimination. Pick one day every week where you will not do these unhealthy things, and replace it with something better (and healthier). Once you are comfortable with that one day, add on another day per week to "go without". Ideally, you will be able to eliminate it altogether.

The Best Indie Makeup Companies

"Buttercupcake" by Sugarpill Cosmetics

If you like indie makeup, raise your hand. Personally, I love it. When I have the time, I make it myself, but when I don't I call in the pros... or just visit their online boutiques and shop my heart out. One of my favorite things about buying from small makeup companies is that the prices are much lower than anything you'd find at Sephora. Additionally, the products are probably better than at Sephora, too, because the majority of small companies make mineral makeup, which is all natural. Besides... who doesn't like to support the little guy? Here are some that deserve some serious love:

♥ Sugarpill -I've always loved Sugarpill Cosmetics. Okay, obviously not always, but since I discovered the company sometime last year they've been my "on a pedestal", go-to makeup place for a while! It's an indie business, with the professionalism of a large company. The packaging is fun and the colors are... even more fun! Love the Lumi Loose and Starling Loose shadows!

♥ Aromaleigh- I haven't tried them personally, but I've heard nothing but good thing and read killer reviews. They have a massive array of colors available as far as eye shadows goes, with a select few eau de toilets available (which are currently striking my fancy.) Again, they come highly recommended. Plus! It looks like they are having a major sale right now, so be sure to take a peek!

♥ Noella Beauty Works- I didn't start buying makeup on Etsy until I found Noella Beauty Works. Based out of New York, this indie beauty also offers a massive array of eye shadow colors. No synthetic dyes, fragrances, parabens or preservatives. I like the way this girl thinks. Unfortunately, she's on vacation until February 1st, but when she comes back be sure to stop in! The intensely close up pictures are seriously daunting, aren't they?

"Babycakes" by Face Candy Couture

♥ Lime Crime- This little number, run by Doe Deere, has gotten a bit of flack in the past about her line of cosmetics. Some good and some not so good. I'm not going to get into the details or dish what the drama is (you can Google it yourself), but I would like to say that I admire the shop. I'm sure that she puts a sincere amount of work behind her line, and both her color selection and packaging are great. Very professional, in my opinion.

♥ Brazen Cosmetics- This is another Etsy shop that I love, love, love. They also have an official website now, but I am partial to the Etsy shop. The whole vibe and personality of this shop is fabulous... I can't say enough good things about them. They don't just offer shadow, but blushes, lip color, and complexion colors. Cute, fun, good price, overall 5 stars.

♥ Johnny Concert- I'll admit, I was really skeptical when I first heard of Johnny Concert. Probably because it doesn't sound anything like a cosmetics company, right? But when I finally took a look at the site, I was more than blown away. Think punk rock meets feminine with a really small slice of goth on the side. Basically, if you're on your way to a rock concert (or want to look like you are!) this is the place to go. This is also one of the few indie beauty companies I've found that offer eyeliner (haven't tried it yet). Highly recommended!

♥ Face Candy Couture- Another Etsy favorite. And while they only offer eye shadow, their collection of colors is probably unbeatable.

♥ Jenulence- This is another one I haven't tried yet, but came recommended to me by a friend. A family owned company that focuses on mineral makeup. They are really perfect if you are looking for colors that are natural, low key, and earthy. Additionally, they offer a massive amount of products, from eyes to lips and even body.

Hi Lovelies!

How is your week going? After a quick weekend trip to the country, I was able to have a really relaxing week complete with chocolate cupcakes, bubble baths, Sex and the City, and some serious comfort food! The weather here has been particularly unfriendly (below 10 F, not joking!) so I've been trying to keep myself occupied and out and about.

Additionally, my spring semester at college started up again on Tuesday, so I have that to look forward to! Holiday is officially over (not entirely a bad thing... really!) Despite the near subzero temperatures, here are some things that made me smile:

Wildfox Couture Love

I'm fully aware that I already showed Wildfox Couture some blog love a couple weeks ago, but I wanted to post these photos, because I find their photos inspiring, and their back story particularly interesting, despite the fact that it may not be realistic for the majority of aspiring designers out there. Anyway, I always admire people that maintain the attitude, "You know what? This is what I want to do. I have a good feeling about it, so I'm doing it."

A lot of my readers agreed on the fact that WC is ridiculously overpriced (a tee will set you back about $65.00) and I have to say that I agree. This doesn't mean I don't love their brand, or the ideas behind their simple designs, but I don't think I could justify paying these prices for their clothes. If I had the money to spend, I probably would... but wouldn't we all? Perhaps I would buy them on Ebay, or at a second hand shop if I saw them, though.

Additionally, I really like how WC started out simply designing only tee shirts... however, it seems they've branched out, which for some reason I find mildly disappointing. In any case, I adore their collection photos. Their choice in themes always seems to be on point, doesn't it?

Is anyone else obsessing over spring wear yet? Despite the fact that it's only mid January, I've noticed my spare time has been all about shopping for warm weather looks. Dresses, tunics, and florals, please. I've been digging a combination of bright and soft colors, bows and an over all girliness style, lately. Prints, too. Anything that reminds me of cake or candy automatically goes on the list. Really digging these softer "cotton candy" pastels:

The Coolest Tote Bags Ever

Blowing Fashion Tote Bag by Inverted Commas

Inverted Commas is one of my newest obsessions. I mean, just look at the illustrations. How can you not be intrigued enough to wonder who the designer or inspiration is behind these pieces? After paying several visits to his site, and his tumblr page, I finally shot him an email complete with both praise and questions. And, yes- it's a he! His name is Francesco Lo Lacono, and he is from Italy.

♥ How do you feel about fashion? What is fashion to you?
My love for fashion has increased in the past 2/3 years, I always enjoyed to dress up, but I think I left out some possibilites and I avoided trying new things. During my latest studying years, I made a project about Fashion Photography, and so I started to know more the fashion world... Fashion can be a form of art, for me I guess it has a more daily use, I just try to dress up every day.

♥ How old are you?
I'm 29...yeah, almost 30!

It's an option I keep for later, maybe, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make t-shirts as well. I'd love to make something different, so I need some time to figure it out.

I do! I've some ideas to think more about, and I'm starting to working to new designs that hopefully will come out as soon as possible! I'm enjoying this venture, so every day it's like a new day to discover, I need to wait a while and see how people will react to INVERTED COMMAS, then I'll take more steps!

What it's Like to be a Fashion Student

It's actually pretty awesome. Only a few of my regular readers probably already know this, but I studied fashion design for a short while at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since I know a lot of you are interested in fashion, maybe you want to know what it's actually like to study fashion, as a profession?

First of all, let me say that I grew up in a really small town that was in a country-ish area, with little diversity (if any.) So making a move to a big city like San Francisco was amazing in itself to me. I love the city. The weather often ideal, there is always something to do, and inspiration awaits on every corner. There is something about cities that make you feel like you can do anything and be anyone. If you don't know what you want to do with your life, I recommend planning a trip, or even moving, to a city for a while. There are so many different kinds of people doing just about everything in the book, you'll see so many cool things and realize that anything is possible. All of sudden it will become not about what is available to you, or what is "practical", it's about what you like.

Here is a breakdown of my first semester classes:

Fashion Business- We studied everything from textile production, marketing, and starting and running business. All basics.
Fashion History- The influences dating way back to Marie Antoinette, up to modern day Vogue.
Fabric & Textile Technology- Because if you want to be a fashion designer, you obviously need to know your medium. This covered the creation of fabrics, from fiber to finish. Dye processes, special finishes and which fabrics to use for which garments.
Fashion Illustration- A live drawing class. You need to master your contour lines.

I love fashion. Though, I didn't really like school. While I loved to learn, I didn't at all like sitting in a classroom learning. I found it only mildly interesting, uninspiring, and almost an inconvenience to the amazing possibilities that awaited me every moment outside the classroom walls. To get experience early on, I applied for a couple of internships. These were found through the school website. To apply, I had to write up a resume, do an interview and show off garments that I'd already made. I guess I was a good candidate, because I scooped up two internships. Here and here. Both were very different. One was working in a shop, basically doing lowly work (typical life of an intern, perhaps?) like scrubbing floors, but the second was really hands on, and the designer tried to teach me every single day. She also gave me extra fabrics she had leftover to mess around with. She taught me how to call production houses for quotes, how to use a serger, and loads more.

Eventually, I pulled a Jenny Humphrey and started skipping my classes to go to my internships. The internships weren't for credit (or pay!), but I felt I was learning so much more through actual work experience than in school, and to this day I don't really regret my decision to leave school. I sometimes regret leaving San Francisco, though, and I think about it almost every day. I hope I go back someday.

The Good and the Bad
Fashion is so much fun and amazing, but the business can be really hard. While it's full of amazing artists, with amazing visions, it's also very superficial, wasteful, and costly. To start your own clothing line is incredibly expensive. To work under someone is hard, because the pay is usually for very little. It helps if you have an in. A friend of a family member of mine is good friends with Mark Badley of Badgley Mischka. If I'd pursued it, perhaps I could've have gotten an intern there and worked my way up. Networking is really important. Not just with designers, but editors and stylists, too!

Also, the models (probably not all) can be difficult. I had to work backstage for a fashion shoot at this club for one of my intern jobs, and my job was to make sure the models did not drink until the shoot was done. It was a nightmare... they were so unpleasant, and they literally tower over you because they are so tall (I'm only 5'3"), so it's really intimidating.

All in all, it was an amazing experience. If you're serious about fashion and learning the technicalities and savvy behind it- not just the raking in the glitz and glamor of it, then you would probably love it. Also, as far as designing, you have to have some sort of niche. It's hard to see a designer and seriously think: "I want to do exactly what she's doing!" You are inspired, but realistically, that's not original. You need to think of it in terms of, "I can do that better." And then really do it.

How to Screen Print a Fashion Tee

I've been really into this whole thing for a while. Honestly, I've been thinking on and off about starting my own line... (I'm talking really, REALLY small... just 5-7 pieces or so!) I know how to make dresses, but I love the idea of custom tee shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts. I'd love to have a tee that said "Love & Cake", or "Spread Love, Eat Cake" or something like that.

I love watching simple tutorials on youtube, among my favorites are BubzBeauty, and SecretLifeofaBioNerd. In case anyone else is interested in screenprinting simplified:

Lazy Sunday DIY: Banana Pops

I actually came across this DIY a month or so ago, through Craftzine, and I knew that a lot of my readers here would love it. It's really simple and really delicious!

Ingredients Needed:
3 Large Bananas
5 Ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
5 Ounces white chocolate3 Teaspoons shortening or butter
Rainbow sprinkles
Chocolate sprinkles
Popsicle sticks
Parchment paper
Measuring spoons
2 small bowls
2 spoons
Cutting board

Begin by peeling the bananas and cutting them in half. Push a popsicle stick halfway through each banana. Set them on a plate in the freezer while you melt the chocolate. In a double boiler, (or microwave for 30 second increments on high, stirring every 30 seconds until fully melted), melt the chocolate chips and 1 1/2 teaspoons of shortening. Follow these same steps to melt the white chocolate.

Take the bananas out of the freezer and place them one at a time on a piece of laid out parchment paper. Pour the melted chocolate on the banana, and roll the banana to cover it entirely.

Then dip it into the sprinkles (or just sprinkle them all around). Allow the chocolate to harden for a minute or so before placing the banana back on the plate and in the freezer. Enjoy!

As a former business owner in cosmetics, I've always had a fascination with fragrances. Perfume in particular, though it's actually a lot more complicated than the simple DIY's on the internet may allow you to believe. Making a basic solid fragrance is easy, such as a grapefruit and vanilla or a jasmine and rose, but real perfume is all about chemistry. High notes, base notes... perfume making is not for amateurs.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Viva La Juicy, or Victorias Secret Angels Heavenly, but when I came across Roxana Illuminated, I became entirely fascinated. First of all, she offers so many different products -both solid and alcohol based. The botanical perfume chemist and entrepreneur, Roxana, began in aromatherapy (also not for amateurs) and now creates her perfumes from some of the finest ingredients in the world. Essences from Arabia, Madagascar, and the Mediterranean.

New Hair Extensions

Over Christmas break, my sister had me take out her sew-in extensions, which turned out to be perfectly reusable, so she gave them to me and I attempted (myself) to put them in yesterday. It's very, very easy and doesn't even take that long. I recommend it if you want to mess around with different looks. The color is probably a shade lighter than I would have liked, but I still think it came out okay.

Has anyone been to the Coachella music festival? I've been wanting to go for a couple years now (really to see The Kills. Alison Mosshart is my girl crush) but it's never worked out. The new lineup was just released, with a countdown of 92 days! Exciting. The Monthly Gameplan? Take More Risks, Babe.

Or possibly just one risk. You see, earlier this week I was reading this amazing article over at The Daily Love, and couldn't get it out of my head. I mean, wow. I knew there as inspiration bubbling inside me and that my brain was trying to churn up an article ... or something ... that could be equally as inspiring.

Instead, I thought I might inspire you with a challenge.

"Risky Business!" is a Daily Love article by Eide Magazine editor Tova Gelfond, which basically explains how important risk taking can be to your happiness. Think of how much of a downer it is to feel held back, trapped, or (the worst!) afraid of failure. In fact, fear of failure is the number one reason I hear from people as to why they don't pursue something they feel really passionate about.

In light of the new year, and not just for fun, but for your happiness and well being, too, my challenge to you for the remainder of January is to take one risk. It can be anything, even something small. Such things can include, but certainly aren't limited to:

♥ Talking to someone you have been to shy to approach.

♥ Opening up that Etsy shop your friends have been encouraging you to open.

♥ Switching majors because of what you really want to do with your life. Not what is deemed "practical" by your friends and family.

♥ Learning to drive a stick shift (Yes! This can be scary... and risky!)

♥ That project you've been half-assing? Try sitting down, making a real plan for finishing it, and putting in the effort it deserves.

♥ Making the decision to quit a job that you hate. (Note: Have a backup plan, or a bit of funds stashed away!)

♥ Spontaneously pack your suitcase for a weekend road trip with your bff's and go where the road takes you. (Be sure to bring a camera!)

Anything that makes you feel a wee bit uncomfortable, nervous, and more excited than ever before is probably a good thing! Embrace the feeling of not knowing exactly what's going to happen. Just know that it will be something good. After all, it was your decision.

Gypsy Warrior

I came across this new shop last week and am really intrigued. A seemingly successful collaboration between Nicla DiCosmo and Michel BezozaWith, the Gypsy Warrior boutique combines a half bohemian/half rocker style, and a pretty chic selection of dresses, tops, and vintage pieces. They describe themselves as:

"Fashion-forward clothing with a distinctive New York Edge."

More good news? Their prices are surprisingly reasonable! Here are a few of my favorites:

How to Deal When You Find out your Idol is a Fake

Did you ever look up to someone so much and come to find that they aren't really what you thought? I'm sure that in some form or another, we've all had this tragic revelation at some point in our lives. It's incredibly devastating... heartbreaking, really. When you have this bubble image of someone, and they inspire you to do great things... you want to be like them, right? Only with your own suave. Then the haze starts to clear and you slowly (or suddenly) start to realize that the image of them you are holding just isn't accurate. All of a sudden the dreams that you were holding, and the inspiration that you'd been working off of was just... not real. So, can you still aspire to do something that another person cheated their way into doing-or worse-didn't actually do at all? What does this burst of reality mean for you? Read on:

♥ Recognize that even though this affects you, it's not about you. It's very easy to fall into this trap. When something affects us so strongly-even if it's not really about us, we sink into various unpleasant feelings as if what has happened were about us. And you may be feeling sad, or let down, or disappointed... but finding out that this person isn't who you thought they were doesn't have to do with you. They didn't do it to spite you. They most likely didn't even think that their dishonesty, or bad choices were significant to you. A lot of times when people are dishonest about who they are, what their talents are, and how they made it to where they are is because they are ashamed of something within themselves. Their denial does not have to do with you. This is especially true when it's happening to someone we feel a connection to, such as an idol, mentor, or friend. Remember, just because someone that you look up to didn't make good decisions, took the easy way out, lied about who they are or how they became who they are, or just turned out to be not what you thought, does not mean that this will be how you need to do things. You can (and will) move on, and succeed in your own way.

♥ Make your own path. Looking up to someone, and wanting to follow in their footsteps is all good and well. I concur that it's important to have people like this in your life, for yes-they will inspire you. Just be sure that you're doing what you want for you. Don't try to become someone else and mimic their life. Take small pieces of their life story, or amazing things they did and allow them to inspire what you plan to do. Then, act upon it in a way that works best for you. After all, no one can do things your way better than you can

♥ Don't make their mistakes. Whether you heard your all time favorite actress dissing on their fans, or you found that the supposed "self-made" business guru was actually trust fund kid, it's going to effect the inspiration you felt from their story and their work all this time. When you find yourself in the position of being able to inspire others and give advice to the people just starting out, be sure that you don't make the same mistakes. Stay true to who you are and what you've worked for. Don't do anything your not comfortable with. And, of course, always be gracious to those who admire you.

Pink Rum Frosting

I'm a vanilla girl at heart, but once in a while I love some really good chocolate. Here's a recipe that I most definitely will be trying later this week:

Ingredients:
♥ 1 cups Flour
♥ 1 cup Sugar
♥ 1/2 Cup Cocoa
♥ 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
♥ 1 Stick Butter (Softened)
♥ 1 Egg
♥ 1/2 Cup Sour Cream
♥ 1 Teaspoon Vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. In a separate (larger) bowl, cream together the butter and sugar, then add the egg, vanilla and sour cream. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until combined. Fill evenly in cupcake tins and bake for approx. 30 minutes (until toothpick comes up clean). Allow to cool before frosting!

Pink Frosting
♥ 1 Stick Butter (Softened)
♥ 4 Cups Confectioners' Sugar
♥ 1/4 Cup Bailey's Irish Cream
♥ 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
♥ 1 Tablespoon Milk
♥ 1 Tablespoon Brewed Coffee
♥ Red Food Coloring

Beat ingredients together, starting with the butter and gradually adding the sugar. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Add the food coloring gradually (the amount depends on how bright you want the color to be!) Recipes from Ming Makes Cupcakes!

When someone gives you advice, or you read something that inspires you, how often do you actually act upon it? Do you just think it's great advice, have a mind epiphany, and then not follow through? All of us are guilty of it. There is a big, bad difference between thinking something is great advice and then actually stepping out on your own to do it. You will be a much happier person if, even in baby steps, you make your thoughts become actions.

Betsey Johnson Love

Betsey Johnson Sketches

Even though I probably wouldn't wear a lot of her clothing, I find Betsey Johnson's designs so inspiring. They are always fun, flirty, and gorgeous. While a lot of them are what I'd consider too formal for my style, I really like a lot of her more low key pieces. Dresses with too much tulle don't strike me as every day wear. That's not to say I don't love looking at them, though!

I love this, even if I wouldn't wear it, except to a formal event... or maybe a picnic.

The sweater is cute, but I love the leggings more!

Again, a dress I probably wouldn't wear daily, but I still love it.

I like all of these looks, but most particularly on the far left.

I love cake.

Lazy Sunday DIY: Bath Bombs

Sex Bomb by Lush Cosmetics

It seems like several of my readers are pretty excited about this DIY, which makes me equally as excited! I've gotten a couple comments and emails about bath bombs already (a couple people aren't even sure of what they are!) Enjoy!

Bath bombs are cupcake sized bath products. They are made of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate-both natural ingredients- that create a fizzing sensation when combined with water. Think of those Emergen-C drinks.... a similar effect. With bath bombs, you can add moisturizers, essential oils, and fun scents that are released into your bath tub as the bomb fizzes away. Hence, you can relax blissfully.

Ingredients Needed:
♥ 1 Cup Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
♥ 1/2 Cup Citric Acid (You can find this in smaller amounts at health food stores, but I buy it in bulk here. Yes, I'm a bath junkie and must have it on hand at all times!)
♥ 1-2 Tablespoons of your favorite oil (If you don't know which oils are best for your skin, I recommend jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, or macadamia nut. Olive oil is good, too, but beware it has a strong scent!) I find coconut to be the very best, because it's very emollient and soaks into your skin better than any other oil)
♥ 1 teaspoon of your favorite fragrance. Again, I buy things in bulk here, and sometimes I buy fragrances here. I know craft stores like Michaels carry cheaper fragrance oils, too. If you prefer essential oils (these are non-synthetic), health food stores carry them. As far as essential oils, I'd recommend lavender, tangerine, or grapefruit. Be sure that if you want vanilla scented you use vanilla fragrance oil and not vanilla extract.
♥ 1 cup of water, set aside in a bowl, or even better a misting squirt bottle
A mold shape (It doesn't have to come out round. The mold can be anything... some people use a cupcake tray, an ice cream scoop, a measuring cup, a meatball maker, or you can just shape the bomb with your
hands)

Combine the baking soda and citric acid in a wide mouth bowl. You need to mix with your hands, so having a wide dish is best. When they are thoroughly mixed, add the oils, and mix very well. You'll notice the consistency slightly change from powdery, to sort of cakey. If you crush some of the mixture into your hand, it may stay in that form for a few seconds. That's perfect! The next part is tricky: You need to take the water you set aside, and add it to the mixture a tiny bit at a time. I'm talking drops. This is why the mist/squirt bottle is handy. You add a tiny bit of water, then mix really well with your hands! Then add water, then mix. Add water, mix. Etc. I don't actually use a squirt bottle, my method is to dip my fingertips into the bowl of water and "flick" the water into the mixture, then mix.You won't use the entire cup of water. When the mixture is just at the point where it can hold a shape (try to make a ball shape with your hands, really tightly packed) then it's done. It should be left to harden in a cool, dry area for about an hour or so.

Here is the important thing to remember: If you add too much water at a time, the mixture will start fizzing on you before you can even mold it into the "bomb" shape and get it into your bath. Then you'll just have a bowl of fizzing mixture. Not good. If you try to mold it into shape and it keeps loosening or "growing", you've added too much water. One good way to tell is hold the mixture up to your ear... if you can hear it fizzing, then it's pretty much botched and you'll have to throw it away and start over.

While the ingredients and steps are fairly simple, bath bombs can be tricky little guys to get just right. If you add too much water, the entire project can be ruined, or your bath bombs will get cracks in them as they are drying. You can still use them, but they aren't "pretty" looking. If you don't add enough water, they won't hold their shape long enough to harden and be usable. It takes a bit of practice, and once you get it it's convenient to be able to make them and not buy them! Another plus, is that the ingredients are inexpensive enough that you don't feel so bad if you mess up a couple times.

Since their beginning in 2007, they've grown into an amazingly inspired ready to wear brand and I admire both Emily Faulstich and Kimberley Gordon as the head designers. Not to mention that they've taken both Hollywood and the fashion world by ... storm? More like a hurricane. In just 4 years they've featured in Glamour, WWD, Nylon and scene on celebrities from Vanessa Hudgens to Christina Aguilera and Halle Berry.
